WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP HISTORY -  Washington Township was originally surveyed in 1816, and was subsequently organized as a Township in 1827, only five years after Macomb County was formed.  At the time of its formation, Washington and Bruce Township were combined.  The Township's first inhabitants, other than Native Americans, were from New York and settled near the Village of Romeo.  The remaining residents were widely dispersed throughout the combined two townships.  A total of 40 families inhabited the 72 square mile area.  The Township has historically been a productive farming community,  with a strong emphasis on orchards.  Beginning in th 1950's much of the farmland has been sold and converted to subdivisions.  The current Township is 36 square miles: from 26 Mile Road to 32 Mile Road and from Dequindre to Hayes (Powell) Roads.  The Current population is approx. 20,000.
