SHELBY TOWNSHIP HISTORY - Shelby township is a growing and diverse community. An 1822 farmhouse, the township's oldest remaining structure, stands proudly amidst the townhip's newest homes. One of the nation's most ambitious canal projects, the Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal, runs through the township. An 1871 schoolhouse, the Andrews School, provides a unique learning experience for students of all ages. Shelby Township was surveyed and opened for general land sales in 1818. A township goverment was organized in 1827. The settlement of Disco at the crossroads of 24 Mile Road and Van Dyke, began in the 1830s and was a busy community. The 1928 Packard Proving Grounds, an engineering marvel, graces Van Dyke Avenue. A  mile north west of Utica you will find the remnants of a Historic farm, Springhill Farm. Springhill farm was used during the 19th century for southern slaves escaping to Canada. Later on this home would be used as another historical location. LOCAL GOVERNMENT - A legislative enactment of April 12 1827 gave authority and the first township meeting was held at the double log house of Perez Swift on section 21 (23-24 mile/Van Dyke-Shelby).  The Township Offices are located at 52700 Van Dyke on the south/east corner of Van Dyke and 24 Mile. STONEY CREEK METRO PARK - Located On the northern end of Shelby Township Stoney Creek Metro park features 4,461 acres of prime recreational lands, this top-rated park's scenic, hilly terrain surrounds beautiful 500-acre Stony Creek Lake. It also features a nature center, a hike-bike trail, beaches, boat launch facilities, a disc golf course and a 18-hole regulation golf course. EDUCATION - There are 3 school districts in Shelby Township primarily most of Shelby consists of  the Utica District there are also in some sections Romeo District and Rochester Hills District.  Local colleges include Macomb Community College and also not too far away 2 additional colleges which are Oakland University and Oakland Community College.

LOCAL SHOPPING - Local shopping includes many facilities including the 2 local malls which are a shoppers dreams. Lakeside Mall which is located on the south/east corner of hall/schoenherr and also Macomb Mall which is located at Gratoit/Masonic off I-94.  There are many other local places to shop in Shelby Township.
